This iconic building in Nice at No. 1, Place Charles Félix, dominates the east end of the Promenade des Anglais and was once the home and studio of Henri Matisse.

At first Matisse and his family lived on the third floor of the building before moving up to the apartment on the top floor.

It was at Place Charles Félix that Matisse painted his great series of 'Odalisques'. Each model had a different coloured background made up of exotic Moroccan fabrics, brightly patterned cushions and multi-coloured, striped mattresses and pillows all arranged specially for each painting.

This oil on canvas by Alan Halliday captures the special quality of the yellow stucco on the exterior of the of the building itself, unchanged since Matisse's day, and also includes the palm tree which Matisse would have known in it's infancy and which is now grown to maturity. Nearby in Cours Saleya, is the old flower market of Nice.
