The 'Bestiaire' is an oil on canvas from Halliday's series of paintings of animals and birds frozen in movement. In this sense, the lion and the wolf as they are depicted in the painting, will never catch their prey. But with the inner ear, we still hear the noises they make, including the bleating of the sheep. Throughout his career Halliday has admired the cave paintings of Lascaux and Alta Mira, identifying them with contemporary painting in general and his own in particular, despite the fact that they are more than fifteen thousand years old.
