The garden of Serre de la Madonne, on the outskirts of Menton and by the Italian border with France, was created by the American Lawrence Johnston. At the time he was also living in England where he created the garden at Hidcote Manor. An outstanding feature of the garden is the abundance of water; in the water terrace by the house; the two large reflecting pools; the papyrus pool and some circular ponds where the artist was able to draw this frog sleeping, immobile, in the sun.
